Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono Born in Tokyo in 1933. An avant-garde visual artist, musician, and a peace activist. Married John Lennon of The Beatles, and later became known for their collaborative peace activism efforts.

In 1953 Ono left Gakushuin University at the age of 20 and enrolled at Sarah Lawrence University, an American college where she studied music and poetry. Ono created her first instructional piece in 1957. Starting in 1959, she set New York as her base and her work as an avant-garde artist begins. Ono was influential in the Fluxus movement and successfully carried out performances and urban “happenings.”

In 1966, Ono left for London, U.K. In November of the same year, she opened an exhibit and met John Lennon. They married in 1969. Throughout the latter half of the 1960s and 70s, the two become famous for their work in peace activism. Even after Lennon’s death, Ono continues to spead the message of “Peace and Love” to the world. In 2009, Ono received the “Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement” award. She currently resides in New York.
