Tomoo Gokita creates his artworks with only two colors of paint - black, and white. Moving through a delicate intermediary space between abstraction and figurative, Gokita intertwines a complex variety of gradations, accents and tones, so that each work evolves into a unique wealth of suggestive imagery.

Another conceptual quality that is particularly important to the artist is improvisation. Gokita intentionally leaves the brush's touch on the canvas, to grasp onto a feeling of live action; and in that direct manner, he conveys a cool yet controlled quality when creating his superbly high-quality pieces. This series portrays the familiar theme of abstract portraits rendered with the spirit of a systematic object, yet what makes them particularly unique is that they are the first series of prints for Gokita. These extraordinary works are not being printing in Japan, but at New York's premier Laumont Studio. This prominent printing studio has become well-known for printing the works of a number of famous artists, including Gabriel Orozco and William Kentridge. The quality of the digital and pigment prints are considered to best in the industry. In recent years, pigment prints have achieved the excellent archival quality and vibrancy of digital prints, with the distinctive high-quality of silkscreen or lithographic prints. They are not far off from paintings in its texture or detail, and it is only fitting that these beautifully high-quality prints have been used to reflect the unique world of Gokita's works.
