Toys brought from children
The "Happy Ring" series use Happy Meal toys that children acquired from McDonald's. Apparently, the Hello Kitty and Tigger figures are in abundance, so they were used to create rings. As the pieces are former toys used by children, some figures are clean while others are dirty. The objects are vibrant with clear color contrasts, so when made into rings, they create patterns. Coming from a family of Oshima Tsumugi (mud-dyed textiles) producers, Fuji grew up viewing beautiful patterns. The idea of sequences of similar shapes forming circles may have come from his sense of aesthetics he cultivated as a young boy.
About "Kaekko"
Fuji took vinyl plastic material that he had accumulated at his home, and asked preschoolers and first graders if they wanted to do anything with the material. The children told him that they wanted use the plastic to "open a shop." Since he also had more toys than he knew what to do at home, Fuji decided to open a flea market. However, he did not think children should use real money, so he organized a "kaekko (swap)" shop where children could barter toys. Children even manage the "kaekko" shop, and kids who come to "kaekko" without toys can help out, gain points, and trade them for toys.
